The Labyrinth of Marriage

Photobucket

The Maze

Her long wavy blond hair caressed her back and shoulders and when she turned to look me over wisps of her hair veiled part of her face her eyes burning sultry embers and her lips with a knowing look…bedroom eyes in public. Tattoos littered her fair body her dress short at the top and short at the bottom more skin than cloth her ensemble.

My eyes played games with her figure curious of where some tattoos started and more importantly where they ended, attentive to her slight seductive wiggle like a moving target when stirring forward in the line for her drink. She received it and took an alluring sip and stepped towards me, she smiled ‘that smile’ and moved her head slightly to adjust her long strands of hair from touching her lips and eyes, painted lips, painted eyes, painted nails, painted body…the canvas of my mind open to her artistry…

The storm obscured this dazzling art gallery of one as my wife brushed past Tattoo Girl carrying my drink and hers…Disappointment painted on the face of Tattoo Girl anger upon that of my wife…The former cast adrift seeking another artful admirer…the latter eyes riveted to my sheepish rogue eyes cutting into my pirate mind…excuses piling up in dead ends…a rat at the crossroads with a truck coming from every direction, rodent road kill, caught with the cheese in my paws, whiskers covered in crumbs….smoke screens and mirrors the puzzle of excuses and trying to let her know the real me…the me that would never cheat… the one who is a knight in shining armour, the one who loves her…I squirmed in the rat trap that was crowning my futility while trying to explain me the inner me…I was lost with no golden thread to find my way…

She told me in her wisdom far beyond mine that relationships were built upon trust, faithfulness…and words without faithfulness were like trust without deeds they were dead and so never alive…and if I didn’t stop being unfaithful I would be dead…

The Labyrinth

This was people watching central so I rested my novel
Ender's Game upon the small table and observed the scene…families, couples and singles moved about some in clusters others in duets or solo. Some in laughter, others chatting small talk, some in serious discourse and others silent…some silent in words but shouting in action or looks…

One such exhibitionist was a curious woman painted in a puzzle of tattoos and either lacking sufficient funds to buy an entire dress or lacking in taste to care that she was showing off her flesh raw to medium rare….

An exhibitionist without a voyeur is rather like a fisherman without fish…bankrupt... fishnet stockings or not. Certainly she had an allure to her a certain beauty that transcended her skin overindulgence yet the fruit she tempted with seemed in need of pesticides…

She appeared to be alone in the crowd, how sad in need of a friend…and she found one as my wife guided her to our small table explaining to me that Velvet as she was called was new in town and they had been talking in the drink line…I understood in our private unspoken language that this was an opportunity to grow friendship, that Velvet was lonely and we should pour some of our lives into hers…to help her set root in our community…all this from receiving the golden thread my wife smiled to me with lips and eyes…a data portal and more to her heart mind and soul…our clarity password of love….knowing and being known…and living it…

The term labyrinth is often used interchangeably with
maze, but modern scholars of the subject use a stricter definition. For them, a maze is a tour puzzle in the form of a complex branching passage with choices of path and direction; while a single-path (unicursal) labyrinth has only a single Eulerian path to the center. A labyrinth has an unambiguous through-route to the center and back and is not designed to be difficult to navigate.

This whole piece was very clever LS! Well done! :D

Hi Miladysa…

LOL

Thanks…Interestingly just today I observed one of our local squirrels indulging in strange antics with one of the local bunnies. He was chattering away at it and jumping precariously from one branch to another. Those rodents…and I didn’t even see any tattoos… :D

One of the best posts I have ever read on a blog! I love the way you dug into the human mind. I liked the funny end line from The Maze and the part about the pesticides and I never knew there was a difference between a maze and labyrinth.

Hey LS!

Yes, the new Graffiti Image is gorgeous!! Look at that...congratulations, darling :D!

THE MAZE

"(...) bedroom eyes in public" - wow...that is one sassy young lady, eh? Now this expression reminded me of a R&B song...I think it is by Joe (ever heard of him)?

Let's proceed...

"Tattoos littered her fair body her dress short at the top and short at the bottom more skin than cloth her ensemble." - oh my..."tattoos littered"..littered? LOL LOL LOL were they that many? Do you fancy tattoos in a woman, LS?

Aha...your wife noticed that the eye contact, eh? Yes, women always know when their men is being coveted by other women...I think men always know too, I guess...a question of Couple-national security.

"the one who is a knight in shining armour, the one who loves her…" - what a romantic view! Would you say that women want a knight in shining armour, or do they pretend to only want one in order to make their men feel more virile?

"She told me in her wisdom far beyond mine that relationships were built upon trust, faithfulness…and words without faithfulness were like trust without deeds they were dead and so never alive…" - *clap clap clap* you go, girl!

"and if I didn’t stop being unfaithful I would be dead…" - LOL LOL you go, girl! LOL....

THE LABYRINTH

"…some silent in words but shouting in action or looks…" - these are the most dangerous ones lol...

"(...) and either lacking sufficient funds to buy an entire dress or lacking in taste to care that she was showing off her flesh raw to medium rare…." - LOL LOL LOL LOL this was a good one LOL *nodding*! This is the most skillful periphrasis I have read recently...to call her vulgar would've been enough LOL LOL...

"Certainly she had an allure to her a certain beauty that transcended her skin overindulgence yet the fruit she tempted with seemed in need of pesticides…" - ROFL...oh my Lord...you do show contempt towards vulgarity, don't you? But I fully understand you, there is nothing like mystery in a woman/man, right?

So, what happened to Velvet, did you guys influence her life?

I loved the final explanation...the difference between maze & labyrinth: but a marriage is like a labyrinth for it was not designed to be difficult o navigate, but people are the ones who make it hard to navigate. With wisdom and love, anything is easy to navigate in this life.

Should we assume that the maze was the first part of your life, and the labyrinth the second part of your life? And should we infer that you were tested twice, with the presence of the Tattoo girl in both scenarios?

LS, a priori this article is not easy to read, but then as we go along we start to perceive its many twists and message: congratulations (very skillful) *bowing*!

Cheers

I respond:
LOL Good question…I think most people of both genders are not that complex in their thinking in relationships. Most have difficulty in reading the gender languages and have common misconceptions. Often people do play head games…there are of course gender roles, nature and nurture, individuality, personality, relationship history, culture etc…Many people do not think deeply about gender and relationships and go on cruise control…

I respond:
I agree that marriage is supposed to be more like a labyrinth (in comparing the two, CG agrees with this also). Wisdom and love are very important but also I believe that the sense of one flesh must predominate along with always trying to put the other first…Marriage is not 50-50 it is 100-100….

Should we assume that the maze was the first part of your life, and the labyrinth the second part of your life? And should we infer that you were tested twice, with the presence of the Tattoo girl in both scenarios?

I respond:
This again brings up the question of if you think Tattoo Girl/Velvet is a real person and if these two scenes or one or the other actually occurred…I did use the first person to describe both scenarios but perhaps that was a literary device. What do you think?

I respond:
LOL What may at first appear a maze or puzzle becomes a labyrinth when one sees the panorama…Often in relationships we get bogged down in the details and don’t focus on the bigger picture…there are very few hills worth dieing on…thank you *bowing*

Hmmm....I don't know...if women are accused of being manipulative, don't you think that this goes beyond "cruise control"?

"*I will cover my ears at this Oprahesque applause…* LOL"

ROFL "Oprahesque" LOL LOL excellent line LOL LOL! *nodding*...

"LOL Stealth…."

LOL indeed....and perhaps more appealing to some...

"LOL LOL *bowing* thanks! :D"

LOL you are welcome, man! It was indeed extremely good....

"ROFL “contempt towards vulgarity” LOL It is perhaps simply a clinical assessment…"

LOL LOL LOL I am trying to be nice here LOL! Oh, clinical assessment...I see....

":) Do think Velvet is a real person or am I being fictitious?"

LOL I think she is real...LOL...so, what happened to her?

"I agree that marriage is supposed to be more like a labyrinth (in comparing the two, CG agrees with this also). Wisdom and love are very important but also I believe that the sense of one flesh must predominate along with always trying to put the other first…Marriage is not 50-50 it is 100-100…."

As I told you over at my blog, I don't think that we should put the other first...we should put the couple (or one flesh as you say) first; the couple's project should always come first without obliterating their individuality.

"This again brings up the question of if you think Tattoo Girl/Velvet is a real person and if these two scenes or one or the other actually occurred…I did use the first person to describe both scenarios but perhaps that was a literary device. What do you think?"

LOL I answered it already. You tried to "fictionalise" the story, but there is a personal tone to it...I would say that it is the opposite of my article: which sounds personal, but most of it is not.

"LOL What may at first appear a maze or puzzle becomes a labyrinth when one sees the panorama…Often in relationships we get bogged down in the details and don’t focus on the bigger picture…there are very few hills worth dieing on…thank you *bowing*"

I agree with your assessment! You are welcome, buddy...it is indeed very good! You surprised me :D!

Cheers

LS,
I just came from Max's post, which seemed very personal. Yours seems almost novel-like. It is written beautifully with a masterful use of the English language. It is very descriptive, but I feel a lack of personal emotion. That's probably because I read Max's version first.

Livingsword said...

Hi Mel….

Its great to hear your voice…

Thank you for your insightful, helpful and very kind comment.

To help me grow do you have any suggestions on how I could build a more personal emotion in my little stories?

Do you think that another aspect may be the varying degree of relationship you have with both of us?

As I read your post it sounded like you were painting pictures of two parallel universes.

In the first universe, you exists in a maze that is littered with landmines (jealously, suspicion, spite). One step here, one step there, careful now because you never know when the telltale "click" of the trigger will pierce the quiet night air. Although the maze contains an infinite number choices, only one final outcome is possible - unhappiness.

In the second universe, you exist in a labyrinth. In this universe, you must travel down an infinitely long path leading to an unknown center. Thus, there is no sure way to tell what lies ahead, only that following the path is the right course. The labyrinth is not cluttered with landmines. Nonetheless, the path contains an infinite number of desirable outcomes (trust, kindness, tolerance). The difficulty, therefore, is in choosing the most desirable outcome among the variety of choices.

From this scenario it follows that our biggest challenge in life is in choosing the labyrinth over the maze. But how are we to know?

Happy trails.

How true! The maze is a dangerous place….clever insight I like how you expressed it….

Another good and helpful insight…even thought the labyrinth can have distractions along the way we know we will not come to a dead end there is a clear passage if we are willing to follow the golden thread…

I respond:
LOL Great question! Although we humans are imperfect creatures in marriage it is possible for us to become as one flesh….relationship harnessed by humility and love…personally I can say the only answer I know to make this work is by the power of God in my life…

Your trip to Vegas has charged your batteries up!

Lol, you have such a way with words, for me it's like watching Joe Satriani playing guitar and knowing I'll never be that good but still able to pick up some crumbs along the way and making it mine.

Men and women are so different when it comes to these type of games, so cool your understanding and wise wife had Velvet over to your table.

Thanks for your kind words you are very encouraging… *hands resting on my Ibanez JS Series guitar/keyboard/mouse*…Bob the extraordinary astronomer!

LOL Gender politics and communication can be quite delicate…do you think either of these scenarios are from real events…and is Tattoo Girl/Velvet a real person?
